Triathlon Rules
Whatever sport you play it is important you fully understand the rules. Triathlon is no different. Follow the link below to download the British Triathlon Rule Book:
New rules are added from time to time, usually during the closed season (winter) so even if you have read them before it's worth reviewing them every 6 months.
If you are taking part in World or European Age-Group Champs or ITU Elite racing it is worth checking the rules on the ITU website as some things may be slightly different. The rules for Ironman or Xterra events are usually based on the rules of the governing body in that country or the ITU rules with any alterations noted in the race briefing or pre-race information. It's compulsory to read any pre-race info provided and attend the race briefing for any vent you take part in as this is how any rule changes will be highlighted as well as safety issues for that event.
Are you interested in becoming a referee. As a club we have very few referees compared to the size of our membership and more would be welcomed. British Triathlon and the North West regional committee can provide the relevant training and help you gain experience. Contact me on coaching@man-tri-club.org.uk if you require more information. Also check out the referees section of the British Triathlon website for information about the qualification structure. This can be found under Volunteers
Below is a summary of some key rules provided by the North West referee coordinator Sue Taylor for age-group triathlons:
General Stuff
- Don't swear or be rude to other competitors or officials. Be a good sport!
- You ultimately remain responsible for your own safety and not putting at risk the safety of others.
- Check all your equipment to make sure it is safe for use. In particular helmets and bikes.
- Don't accept outside assistance from anyone. You need to fix you own mechanicals and carry your own drinks/food during the race.
Numbers
- Do wear a number on your back for the bike section
- Do wear a number on your front for the run section
Transition rules
- You cannot ride your bike in transition. You will be told when you can get on and when you need to get off
- You cannot bring anybody else into transition with you
- You cannot use mobile phones, MP3 players or other sound equipment, either in transition or on the course itself
- Before you take your bike off the rack remember to put on your helmet and fasten it
- Remember to rack your bike before you unclip your helmet and take it off
Nudity
- Nudity is not permitted. So don't get fully changed in transition!
- You will be asked to zip up your top during the race if you have unzipped it too far
Drafting
- Using a slipstream on the bike is not allowed. Read the rules to make sure you fully understand this rule for your event.
