Advice

There is no one magic formula for success in endurance sports. The key ingredients include:

  • Good Genes - Unfortunately we don't get much control over this
  • Long Training History - There is no short cut. The most successful athletes are those with a long history of training. This should ideally begin at a young age through a variety of sports and become more specific as time goes on.
  • Fundamentals Skills - You won't be successful without efficient swim, bike and run technique which are underpinned by balance, coordination, flexibility and stability.
  • Appropriate Nutrition - You get out what you put in so if your diet isn't right your health and performance may suffer. Your life long, day-to-day eating habits are the most important with your diet before/during/after exercise being worth some consideration.
  • Periodised Training Programme - Whatever your current situation a structured training programme following the principles of conditioning can make a big difference to your performance.
  • Effective Recovery - It is all very well training hard but if your body isn't able to recover effectively you won't see the benefits.

This advice section will try to provide you with some useful and interesting information on the points above. It should also help you make the most of the weekly training programme offered by Manchester Triathlon Club in order to meet your own goals. We've split it into the following sections:
