Reasons for starting coaching
- When I first starting training with MTC I soon came to realise how much difference good coaching could make to an individuals performance, and I really benefited from attending coached sessions.
- Firstly I thought it would be a good way to put something back into the sport and help others along, all sports can always do with more volunteers.
- Having started actively coaching I've come to really enjoy it and realise you can get a big kick out of seeing someone else improve or meet goals with your help. It can be just as good or better than you get out of achieving goals yourself.
Reasons for starting triathlon
- Was it a early mid life crisis?? Just after the birth of my first child I wanted a bit more from life than just working in IT and I went to watch the trial event for the Commonwealth Games at Salford Quays, and saw some age groupers and thought yes I can do that. There was no looking back after that.
Most Embarrassing Moment in a race:
- Wetherby Triathlon 2006 : after the triathlon was converted into a Duathlon (because of too much water in the river!!!) I thought great, no messing about I'll wear socks and run in bike shoes to and from transition. Coming in from the bike I slipped and fell on front wheel, with a chorus of laughter and ooohs from the watching crowd. Having buckled the wheel I then had to carry it to transition, (not quite as heroic as Mark Jenkins) where I fell again on the very muddy field.
Worst Moment in a race
- 2008 Geel Long Course Duathlon World Championships, severe calf cramp on start of bike, that I couldn't ease, had to lie on floor and stretch leg, got back on and at least I finished, was the most painful race to date.
Best Moment in a race
- Cockermouth Sprint 2007, first podium spot, which capped a good all-round consistent season where I was third overall and first in age group for North West Regional Series.
