Nantwich Aquathlon, Sunday 30th March 2008

Report by Harry Davies

Aprez le deluge..., the sun came out! After a few miserable wet days, the sun shone on the Fun2tri Aquathlon, Nantwich. Three MTC members, Andy Blair, Andy Rourke and MFW, Margaret ignored the clock change to take part in this friendly event.

The race was at Snow Hill swimming Pool, Nantwich - not the open air pool used in the popular Nantwich tris, but the covered 25m pool alongside. The swim was laned with competitors swimming either once or twice up and down each lane. The run was a very pleasant course on a tarmac track alongside the River Weaver.

Margaret was first off in the 250m swim/2.5k race, had a relaxed swim and then headed off to transition. There, I think she holds the course record for the longest time in transition! I ran ahead to take a photo of her starting the run but I might as well have gone for a coffee first. I think she must have blow dried her hair, put on her make up, had a manicure and painted her toe nails! (Management edit - No, I was just drying myself and hopping about trying to put my legs in my tracksuit!)

Both Andys had a good swim but Andy Blair really stormed through the run. He left everyone else standing and came first in the 500m swim/5k run race.

Andy Rourke had a steady run and finished in good style

Margaret, in only her second race, survived the run with her walk/run strategy and was delighted to finish

But the day belonged to Andy Blair, who won despite having a stitch - great performance, Andy!

This was the last in the Fun2tri race series. They hold races throughout the winter and are ideal for both beginners and more experienced triathletes. Their webpages are at http://www.fun2tri.co.uk/

But if you have missed these, don't panic! As well as the Salford Quays Aquathlons later in the year and the club Duathlons, we now have a new local series of races organised by our mighty swim coach - Dave Quartermain. The details are at http://www.uberfitevents.com/

They are mainly at Boundary Water Park (the location of the club Boundary Breeze triathlon and Chorlton Water Park. The Chorlton events are offroad mountain bike events - ideal for beginners who are still wary of racing on open roads.

In addition, Dave will be organising coached Open Water swims again this year - details will be circulated later.

Don't forget there is the local Tatton Triathlon as well - http://www.tattontriathlon.co.uk/

So, no excuses for members now - we have the best club training in the country, lots of local training events and local races. What more could you ask for?!
