Summer Duathlon Serie Event 1, Wednesday 6th June - Chelford

Report by Martin Webb

The first event of four this summer took place on a fantastic evening in Chelford based around the J2/1 CTT bike course.

Eight MTC members made the bike start line including David Fardon (son of Andy) with Ben Chalmers (son of Andy) forming a relay team with David.

Thanks to Team Westmead 88 each person would receive a 10 mile split time. Each competitor then had about another 0.75 mile to cycle before they reached transition. The run was slightly longer than advertised at 3.6 miles (as measured in the car), about 5.8km in new money! We'll keep the run the course the same for the rest of the series.

First off was Hugh McKenna, although not before Chairman Dabbs was warned for doing a U-Turn near the start, a no-no in the world of time trialing! Paul Wright and Mark Brown fresh from his 18th birthday set off next followed by the "big guns" of Jon Dabbs (complete with fast, new racing machine), Andy Chalmers, Rob Bell and Andy Fardon. Young David Fardon completed the bike line up.

Rob Bell took the honours on the bike with a 24:34, followed by Andy Fardon and Mark Brown. David Fardon completed the ride in an excellent time of 35:08, not bad for an 11 year old! Thanks to Andy Chalmers for adding some humour to the evening by turning right at Chelford roundabout and then heading off on a two mile detour towards Alderley Edge - sorry Andy should have done a better race briefing!

Rob then consolidated his bike ride with the fastest run time to finish first by over 2 minutes. Jon Dabbs, having got a PB on the bike, completed the run to finish second despite still suffering from a cold. Mark finished 3rd with a good all round performance. Paul came in 4th whilst Andy and Hugh tied for 5th.

Fifteen year old Ben Chalmers was pleased he'd teamed up with David Fardon rather than his dad and was able to start the run in good time and completed the run course in 26:18 beating his dad in the process! There's a challenge for event 2!

(Editors note: technically speaking Andy was still back from the bike before David but it doesn't make as good a story!)

Massive thanks to Ala Jackson, for the timekeeping and Deano for transition management. I had to go early so without these guys there would have been no event.

Organisers note: It would be nice to get 15 people for the next event. Usually for a 10 you turn up early to try and get a decent start time. With this series you are pre-entered and you get a fantastic training session as well. Not bad a few quid!
