Big Cow Milton Keynes Olympic Triathlon, 23rd July 2006

Report by Tim Johns

A small posse of MTC triathletes braved the summer heat & national motorway network to enter the MK race. Not a roundabout in sight as you might expect, as the race was held at the Emberton Country Park, complete with lake & camping site.

The swim, if a little short, required negotiating a series of lagoons, together with pond weed & bird life. In fact more like an orienteering course in the water! The bike was a 1 lap circuit, a bit like the Shropshire (Ellesmere) race in terms of geography, while the run was a 3 lap circuit of the Country Park. The course layout was good for spectators & was well supported. A further bonus was the instant race results; these were provided as you crossed the finish line, complete with category placing! An impressive service given there were over 700 competitors.

On such a fast course all MTC members posted personal best times; Andy Quicke & Helen Sloman both had excellent results on their first Olympic distance outing. Phil Stannard, John Murray & Dean Frost all posted sub 2:20's for the first time, all that training paying dividends.

Special mention to the triathlete friendly B&B at Newport Pagnell that provided a separate bedroom for race bikes; a snip at £15/person!
