With the ever increasing popularity of triathlon the number of events is growing all the time. This means you don't need to travel too far to find opportunities to compete. Tri Hard tend to run slighlty more challenging events than your standard triathlon often with hilly bike courses and testing, sometimes off-road runs (e.g. up and down Helvellyn!). Double check the route before signing up especially if you are new to the sport. That said many people take up triathlon to take on a challenges such as these.

UK Mountain Bike Triathlon Series
