Tri England NW Series and Championships 2012

Postby TonyJolly on Tue Mar 15, 2011 12:29 pm

The first event of the North West Championships took place for the 5th time in the last 6 years at Parbold Duathlon on Sunday.

The following are provisional results, however I have checked eligible membership of those claiming prizes, and all seems in order, if you do wish to contest any prizes you have until Tuesday 22nd of March to contest them.

In the men’s championships Martin Cain (GMC Fire and Rescue) added to his impressive list of NW titles, with his first win at this event. Martin is two time defending men’s champion at both the Sprint and Olympic distance championships. Will be interesting to see if he can make a clean sweep this year? Junior, Beau Smith took second place and claimed the junior title, followed home in 3rd by Jon Fletcher. John Hampson took the Vets prizes making it an impressive day for the Fire Service.

In the Women’s event, it was a clean sweep for Manchester Tri club, with 2010 Sprint Champion Bex Heath leading home Deidre McCarthy followed by Sonia Harris, who also took the Veterans prize. Naomi Wai of City of Chester Tri claimed the junior trophy.

In the club leagues, the MTC Women took a small early lead over City of Chester Tri, with Bolton some way back in third place. However with 4 races to go much can change. In the Women’s league only MTC and Chester have won the competition previously, so there is a challenge to the other clubs.

The Men’s league is much closer, with only 19 minutes separating the first 5 places. COLT have taken the early lead, from 2006 and 2008 winners Ashurst bike club. Only Ashurst and MTC have ever won the men’s club league. With a change to only two team members counting hopefully it will lead to a closer competition and possibly a new winner this year?

Please note for eligibility you must be a member of Tri-England and registered as North West on race day to be eligible for the championship events. For the Series you must be a member of Tri-England by the end of the last race of the series. For that reason the series leaders is a little less clear cut, however you can see where membership has been confirmed, or where competitors are not claiming to be members of the region.

Please contact northwestseries@gmail.com for any queries.

You mean to say you haven't been avidly following my previous posts or reading the Tri England NW Website pages

Other races are -
Boundary breeze sprint
Chester Olympic distance
Helvellyn
and an as yet to be determined Aquathlon, it was going to be national aquathlon champs, but as the venue for that is causing some debate, it may ened up being a Thursday evening one. I'll be making a call on that soon.

So get your entries in. Its best 4 races from 5 to count, and you need to enter at least 3 races to be elligible for a prize.
You also need to be a Tri-England Member from the North West.
For the championship races you have to be a member on the day of the race, for the series you must be a member of Tri-England by the last race in the series, i.e. Early September.

UPDATES After Chester -

well done to Rob and Bex......

NW Standard Distance Championships
The Standard distance Championships were held once again at Chester on Sunday 12th June, in somewhat wet and windy conditions.
In the men’s race Beau Smith (COLT) won convincingly by over 4 minutes in a time of 1hour 57.42. Chris Joyce of Redvenom came in second, with Peter Brook taking 3rd place racing for City of Chester Tri.
Beau Smith also collected the juniors prize, with Robert Wilson (Team Trisports) taking vets first place, and Rob Arnold (MTC) the super vets prize.

In the women’s race Bex Heath (MTC) followed up her Duathlon win with another win here, coming from behind to overtake 2003,04,07 and 09 winner Nicola King (Arragons). Nicola took the vets prize.
In 3rd place was Bree Sutcliffe (Chester), with Ruth Isaacs (Chester) taking the super vets prize in what turned out to be a good day for Chester.

With 2 wins out of 2 races Bex Heath has a healthy lead over Dee McCarthy (MTC). In the men’s series Beau Smith and Chris Joyce moved to the top two slots.

In the men’s club League, COLT lead from MTC, with MTC leading from Chester in the Women’s event. Remember you need two finishers to count in the club league.

Please remember to be eligible you need to be a TE NW member. For individual events this means on the day of the race, for the series, by the day of the last race of the series. With Chester there was at least one potential prize winner whose membership had lapsed.

Full details should be on tri-egalnd website soon http://www.britishtriathlon.org/triathlonengland/northwest/news.php

Next race in the Series is Boundary Breeze on Sunday 24th July. I’m told the race is now full.

Sprint champs updates, well done to Bex and Kate......

For both men and women, we need a couple of solid finishes at both Aquathlon next week and Helvellyn to increase chances of taking club league prizes.

North West Sprint Championship Update
The North West Sprint Championships were held at Boundary Breeze on Sunday July 24th, courtesy of Manchester Tri Club.

In the men’s race, defending champion Martin Cain (GM Fire and Rescue) made it three years in the row. Something that to the best of my knowledge has never happened in NW championship events. Second place went to the Beau Smith (COLT) who consolidated his position at the top of the series ranking. Third was Peter Brook (Chester Tri). Beau Smith has a small lead over Chris Joyce, both having completed all 3 events. However with only 4 out of 5 counting Martin Cain and Peter Brook could still have a say in the final placings.

In the women’s race Dominique Searle beat defending champion Rebecca Heath (MTC) into 2nd place, with Kate Ritchie (MTC) coming in 3rd. However Rebecca’s dominance in the NW series means that a top 20 place at the Aquathlon on 4th August will guarantee victory with 1 race to go.

In the Club league competition COLT have a 30 minute lead over MTC in the men’s league, so all to play for, with 2 races left. In the women’s league MTC have a 57 minute lead over Chester Tri.

Next race Salford Quays Aquathlon 4th August.

Aquathlon update -

Post about to go on NW website in next couple of days - which will have attachement also...

North West Series Update – 4th August
Round 4 of the North West series and club league was held at Salford Quays, hosted by Manchester Tri Club. 2 hours before race start it looked like the run could be as damp at the swim, but the skies cleared for a perfect nights racing. With only series points and club league to race for, not to mention just racing, it was the usual fast and frenetic event.

In the men’s event Alex Young held on to a relatively comfortable win, from Beau Smith, with Paul Savage in third spot. These races have come on significantly over the last couple of years and the quality of the start fields is pretty high, with the first few competitors frequently being seen in Elite racing and the British Super series.

Despite not winning, Beau Smith (COLT) made up for it by clinching the series with one race to go. He now has an unassailable lead. He adds the series win to a 1st and two seconds in the championship events and a clean sweep of the junior competitions. 2nd and 3rd are still very open and anyone down to Jon Britton currently in 8th could still win a podium spot.

COLT also hold a 28 minute lead over MTC going into the final round of the Club League. However time gaps at Helvellyn can be quite large, so it’s all to play for, although it looks like a two horse race, so will be important for both teams to have two team members racing that day.

In the women’s event Nic Rowley, won from the MTC pair of Bex Heath and a wetsuit free Kate Ritchie. Like in the men’s event, Bex wraps up the senior series with one race to go. 2nd and 3rd places are still very much up for grabs. As a reminder its best 4 from 5 that count, but you need to complete 3 races to be eligible for a prize.

In the Women’s club league MTC have a commanding lead over Chester, however it’s not unassailable and as with the men, having two competitors racing may be decisive.

Last event is Helvellyn on 4th September, https://secure12.prositehosting.co.uk/e ... d=371&id=5 it appears the event is now full.

North West Senior Series Update
The North West Series and Club League were rounded off at Helvellyn on Sunday 4th Sept.

Despite the series having both been wrapped up, after the previous round there was still plenty to play for.

Martin Cain won the men’s race, beating the course record previously held by a certain A. Brownlee. It was Martin’s second win in the series, but being a race short meant he didn’t impact the podium spots. Chris Joyce (Red Venom) did however do enough to move into 2nd spot overall. Beau Smith (COLT) retained the overall win, with Jonathon Metcalfe Third.

Sarah May (Calderdale Tri) won the women’s race. There were no changes at the top of the Women’s Series, with Rebecca Heath (MTC) winning, ahead of Dee McCarthy (MTC) with Ella Carter (Bolton) in third.

In the men’s club league COLT did enough to hold off MTC, following what has been a nip and tuck battle all year. In the women’s club league Chester also held off MTC to defend their trophy. 2011 is the first year MTC have not won at least one of the club trophies.

Could previous Shield winners arrange for their return to either Tony Jolly or Rob Bishop.

Any queries please contact Tony Jolly at NorthWestseries@gmail.com

Correction. Please not that a correction to previously published results where Mark Livingstone is the actual winner of the Men’s Vet Sprint Championship Trophy.

Awards will be presented at the Tri England North West Annual Awards Evening on 26th November at Lancashire Manor Hotel, Pimbo. Details to be released soon.
