Threaded wheel/cassette issue

Threaded wheel/cassette issue

Postby Dazcooper on Wed Jul 28, 2010 9:11 pm

Hi, this partly relates to my Wanted post in the For Sale forum.

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4199

I don't want to use my road bike on my turbo but have access to a smaller bike that I could potentially rig up to the Turbo but the rear wheel on the bike I'm planning to use on my Turbo is a threaded one. If I was to keep the cassette from that wheel, would it fit to a quick release wheel that I could then use on the Turbo?

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

You can run a none quick release wheel in some (probably most) Turbos. I used a fixed conversion with the rear wheel built on an one-one track hub in my cheapo Elite Turbo last winter, no qr involved there.

If you want to swap the cassette over, it'd have to be to a matching hub. If your other bike without QR ran a freewheel rather than cassette, or one was campy the other shimano, then there'd be no easy swap over possible I'm afraid. See pic for differences:

Best read what Sheldon (r.i.p.) has to say to figure it out yourself:

Thanks for that Andy, maybe I don't need anything and can make do with current wheel.

The Bike is V old at least 25 years. Not 100% sure about wheel mind but it looks as though it could be that old to. The cassette has 6 sprockets and what looks to be a threaded bolt running through and then held together by a bolt at either end. I was worried that the bolts might ruin the turbo when I attach the wheel to the Turbo and tighten it up, so I haven't even tried it yet.
The Turbo has it's own quick release lever that came with it and it has a smooth round surface that slides into the turbo locking mechanism.
Am I worrying for nothing and should I just put the bike on it, or am I right to be worried about ruining the locking system?

The tyre on the current rear wheel is massive so I can't even fit it to the Turbo to give it a go. :(

Looks like I'm shopping at the weekend. Any recommendations for tyres? Is the Continental Ultrasport Home Trainer Tyre the one to go for or is it just extra money spent for little gain?

Ended up using my normal bike for a quick spin so a bit happier now.

Hard to advise without seeing it all up close...

What model turbo is it and what are the sizing numbers on the side of the old bike tyre?

Sounds like you could have 27inch wheel with 1.75 or thicker tyre on older bike, not sure if you can get Conti trainer tyre in that dimension to fit (fwiw i think the turbo tyres are a good investment - saves your road tyres getting squared off).

Good luck :)

Spot on Andy, 27 inch wheel x 1 1/4. Looks like my shopping list is growing.

New Wheel
Tyre
Cassette
Chain

Might have a trip to decathlon to minimise the damage. :)

If you can wait a week or 2 i've a couple of old wheels you can look to see if suit and take one free. May also have a cheapo tyre you could have too to get you going.

Am getting organised now... Did you still want to see if any of my old wheels would do the trick, or did you sort elsewhere?
